JUBILATION!

Jubilation is a unique beast, an a cappella gospel choir with a rock & roll heart.

They love what they do and audiences love them in return!

Born in Auckland in 2000, Jubilation is a virtual gospel supergroup including R & B legend Rick Bryant, entertainer extraordinaire Jackie Clarke and theatre supernova Jennifer Ward Lealand.

Bound not by common belief, but purely by the love of singing, this diverse ensemble includes professional musicians, teachers, actors, a yacht maker, a master builder and a lecturer in Russian.

Their eclectic repertoire of gospel, soul and blues draws from the songbooks of such luminaries as Nina Simone, Tom Waits, Curtis Mayfield, Blind Willy Johnson and the Staples Singers and ranges from the 1800’s to the present day.

A.U.R.A at the Sawmill Cafe

Friday 12 April | 9:00pm | $15*

A.U.R.A – SIL release tour

To celebrate A.U.R.A’s forthcoming album release on March the 8th, A.U.R.A is excited to announce the SIL Tour, which kicks off with us.

Joined by Ben Lemi (French for Rabbits, Trinity Roots, Dawn Diver), Deanne Krieg (Ida Lune, Congress of Animals) and Samuel Austin on live duties, the SIL Tour will take in some of New Zealand’s favourite boutique venues, transforming them into the perfect backdrop to experience this psychedelic folk quartet.

In a statement, lead singer-songwriter Albert Mikolaj describes the latest single, Immensely I, as “An elegy for rebirth. The song is redolent of glowing psychedelic pop, almost deliberately subdued by a euphonic counter-point vocal pattern.”

Immensely I is driven by strong drum beats, punchy bass and Afro-infused guitar riffs, reminiscent of Paul Simon’s landmark release, Graceland. Mikolaj’s lyrics offer a very tender confession, saying of the verse, “It’s a raw reflection of my wild, unbounded core-self being slowly eroded by the emotional pain of growth.”

We are stoked to have A.U.R.A back to the mill! their last show here had us spellbound from start to finish – don’t miss this captivating act.

WELLINGTON SEA SHANTY SOCIETY

Wellington Sea Shanty Society, New Zealand’s Most ‘Sea-Worthy’ Shanty Group™, have been belting out original and traditional sea songs from around the globe since time immemorial (2012). Sailors and landlubbers from across the country have been battered by the rousing chorus of this two-man tempest of pure shanty. The W.S.S.S believe that ‘a shanty shared is a shanty savoured’, so they pass out shanty song sheets to one and all for people to sing along.

The W.S.S.S have toured New Zealand and France multiple times and are known for their raucous and participatory live shows. They have performed at Paimpol (one of the world’s largest shanty festivals), Splore, and a number of other festivals in NZ and France. They’ve released 3 albums: Now That’s What I Call Sea Shanties Vol I, Now That’s What I Call Sea Shanties Vol II and, Ahoy! (an English/French collab with friends Croche Dedans).

The W.S.S.S comprise Vorn Dont le Père Etait Marin, from the indie pop band Vorn, and Lake Davineer from electro pop band Lake South. Vorn is on squeeze box duties, while Lake strums the git-fiddle. Rousing harmonies and raucous foot-stomping abound!

Delaney and Barry at the Sawmill Cafe

Sunday 5 May | 5:30pm | $40*

DELANEY DAVIDSON & BARRY SAUNDERS

ALBUM RELEASE TOUR

Delaney Davidson and Barry Saunders launch Word Gets Around their co-write album with a tour.

“It felt like something that just needed to happen. It felt right.” Says Saunders about the songwriting push these two have wrought into being. “I was just throwing these words and ideas at Delaney and watching them bounce off his head.”

Davidson agrees, “Yes it was all pretty quick, these songs just started appearing out of the kitchen air and we were grabbing them as fast as we could. It has a realness and truth to it. An immediacy that is hard to find in music. Real songs about real things.”

Saunders is a master of localizing the subject, and you can relate to the songs. Guitars in hallways, people on the street, dark smoky parties. These aren’t about some lofty ideal or rooted in glossy production. It’s blood on the floor. Davidson’s production brings his trademark immediacy to the game, and gives these songs a sparkle and grain.

The result? “ It’s a manic and barnstorming balance , at times when we were singing we couldn’t tell whose voice was whose, it all just melded together, I’d be singing in Barry’s voice and he in mine..” Says Delaney. “it must be that deal in blood we made..“

Featuring Chris O’Connor on drums and Mark Hughes on Bass

Adam McGrath at the Sawmill Cafe

Saturday 11 May | 9:30pm | $20*

ADAM McGRATH

RAGGED RAMBLE TOUR

Adam McGrath Lead singer and songwriter from mythical mongrel Christchurch folk/country band The Eastern returns again to the state highways and byways of these long isles as part of his Autumn ‘Ragged Ramble’ Tour.
Described by influential country magazine No Depression as “One of the best modern roots acts from any country period”, by the NZ Herald as “NZ’s toughest minded songwriter” and by Radio NZ National as a “National Treasure”, an Adam McGrath show is primed and proud to reach your heart, head and boots.

A folk singer in the truest, traditional sense but one who’s songs speak to the times we find ourselves in and the people with whom we share them with McGrath has a virtual lifetime spent on the road around NZ and everywhere beyond. He sees his job as to pick up the stories he finds, siphon them down to the bone and the heart and bring them around to the next place and the next.
He’s toured and played with everyone from Fleetwood Mac to Steve Earle to Paul Kelly to Old Crow Medicine Show and many, many more, Barry Saunders from The Warratahs simply described him as “The truth”.
