HOT KNIVES

EP RELEASE TOUR

Hot Knives is the brain child of Warkworth’s musician Bobandii, who after moving to Auckland was approached by Apple Music to create the biggest music single possible. It was here that all five band members came together to create the electric “Nazarite“, which went on to have international success.

Although the flame had been sparked by one individual, the band quickly grew into it’s own monster, and as the band continued to play together, they started to turn the heads of other people in the industry. Hot Knives had been born.

The self titled EP is the very first official release by the band, and encompasses the original intention of the Nazarite track in 4 brand new songs.

With support from SKILAA good beats with a healthy dose of neo soul, hip-hop, alternative folk and improvisation, in addition to some thick vocal harmonies that draw inspiration from both African and Balkan singing traditions

THE JOHNNYS

WITH SUPPORT FROM THE BADS

Australian cowpunk legends The Johnnys are making their long-awaited return to Aotearoa this September for their first national tour in twenty eight years.

With a fistful of foot-stomping tunes tucked under their belts, the rough riding band struck gold with their 1986 album Highlights Of A Dangerous Life spurring numerous chart hits in New Zealand and Australia, and party-starting sets at legendary local venues The Gluepot and Warners. The tour is being held in tribute to their ill bandmate, guitarist Spencer P. Jones (also of Beasts of Bourbon), who sadly won’t be crossing the ditch to join the trio of Graham Hood, Slim Doherty and Billy Pommer Jr.

THE BADS are Sawmill favourites, with their effortlessly cool poppin’ rockin’ country tunes – the perfect support act for this gig!

Princess Chelsea at the Sawmill Cafe

Saturday 27 October | 9:30pm | $30*

PRINCESS CHELSEA

The Loneliest Girl NZ tour

This will be the first time Princess Chelsea has performed to New Zealand audiences in three years. It sees Chelsea and her band return home after an extensive “Planet Earth” circuit of the U.K, Europe and Korea. “I’ve got some new band members, which is pretty cool,” she says “and we have spent the last three months tightening our live set before touring the album…

Chelsea’s trademark arrangements featuring classic 80’s Synths (Yamaha DX7, Roland D-50), ambient guitars, and orchestral instruments are all here but are presented in a more refined and simple manner than on her previous releases.

It sounds like a record made by a lover of pop music across all genres from 60’s girl groups to 80’s power ballads, and late 80’s acid house to 90s pop. Like her earlier work, adult issues are presented in a humorous and sometimes childlike manner, and this juxtaposition rather than softening the blow makes jarring social commentary hit harder.

Jonathan Bree at the Sawmill Cafe

Saturday 3 November | 9:30pm | $35*

JONATHAN BREE

SLEEPWALKING OVER NZ TOUR.

With his love of psychedelically-tinged 60’s chamber pop and stark, dissident lyricism, and his faceless band take the 2018 Sleepwalking album on tour.

His third solo album, Sleepwalking was released in June 2018 via the artist / producer’s own label, Lil’ Chief Records. It saw the emergence of the mysterious masked band – who first appeared in his music video for ‘Weird Hardcore’ (from second album A Little Night Music) – who suddenly caught everyone’s attention with Jonathan’s self-directed music video for the release of ‘You’re So Cool’.

Like his previous two albums, Sleepwalking has a heavy orchestrated element featuring real strings, celeste and soprano vocals, but on Sleepwalking Jonathan’s darker utilities of pop music take these sounds to an eerie and more unsettling landscape.

“Sleepwalking is a record of sublime and sophisticated classic pop that conspires to lead you, willingly, into its dark night… You won’t want to wake from this beautiful nightmare”- NZ Herald

Strange Caravan tour

A collective of renowned kiwi songwriters and solo artists, tracing lineage to many of NZ’s most loved bands, join forces this spring to bring you The Strange Caravan Tour and the Mighty Mill is the last stop

The tour features Bret McKenzie, Age Pryor, Justin Firefly, Nigel Collins and Ben Lemi.
Starting as a series of jam sessions between old friends, the group of songsmiths has blossomed from an ad hoc hangout to full musical partnership over the last eighteen months.

Age Pryor explains; Justin, Nigel and Bret were getting together to try out tunes, and I joined when I happened to be in Wellington – Justin and I had done the same thing before, in jams that became the Woolshed Sessions album.
